British Values
The Department for Education defines British Values as five key principles:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
At Highfields Primary Academy, the promotion of British Values is a fundamental part of school life. These values are woven throughout our curriculum, daily interactions, and wider school community, underpinning our approach to teaching and learning. Through this, we strive to develop caring, respectful, and open-minded young people who are well prepared to contribute positively to modern Britain and the wider world.
The following information highlights just some of the ways these values are embedded into everyday life at Highfields Primary Academy.
Being Part of Britain
At Highfields Primary Academy, we celebrate the rich diversity of our school community while also valuing what it means to be part of Britain. We recognise and celebrate a range of traditions, customs, and national events throughout the year, helping children to develop an appreciation of British culture and heritage.
Children also learn about Britain through different areas of the curriculum, including Geography, History, and RE where they explore Britain’s history, communities, traditions, and place in the wider world.
Democracy
At Highfields Primary Academy, every member of our school community is encouraged to have a voice and make a positive contribution.
One key example of democracy in action is our School Parliament where children are elected to represent their classmates. This reflects the democratic process and helps pupils understand the importance of fairness, representation, and having their voices heard. Representatives meet regularly to discuss ideas, raise concerns, and contribute to decisions that help shape school life.
Other examples of pupil voice include:
- Children helping to create and uphold class expectations and school rules
- Opportunities for pupils to reflect on their learning and set personal goals
- Encouraging respectful discussion, debate, and listening to the views of others
- Taking ownership of their learning, behaviour, and wider contributions to school life
- Opportunities across the curriculum to discuss and vote on important issues
By promoting pupil voice, we help children develop confidence, responsibility, and an understanding of active citizenship.
The Rule of Law
At Highfields Primary Academy, we place great importance on helping children understand the role that rules and laws play in creating safe, fair, and respectful communities.
Our Core Values are clear, consistent, and regularly discussed so that children understand not only what is expected of them, but also why these expectations are important. Pupils learn that rules help everyone feel safe, valued, and able to learn successfully.
Children are encouraged to understand that with rights come responsibilities, and that actions have consequences – both in school and in the wider community. Positive behaviour is promoted through encouragement, reflection, discussion, and recognition of good choices.
This understanding is reinforced through:
- Visits from members of the wider community, such as police officers, firefighters, and other professionals
- Religious Education, where children learn about values, beliefs, and guidance within different faiths
- PE and team activities, where children learn about fairness, cooperation, and following agreed rules
- Assemblies and classroom discussions focused on rights, responsibilities, and making positive choices
Individual Liberty
At Highfields Primary Academy, we encourage children to develop independence, confidence, and self-belief. We promote freedom of choice within a safe, supportive environment, helping pupils understand their rights while respecting the rights of others.
Children are encouraged to:
- Express their views, opinions, and beliefs respectfully
- Make choices about their learning and wider school experiences
- Develop independence and confidence in decision-making
- Take on responsibilities and leadership opportunities
- Explore interests through clubs, activities, and enrichment opportunities
By nurturing individuality and self-confidence, we prepare children to become responsible, thoughtful, and resilient members of society.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Respect is at the heart of life at Highfields Primary Academy. We are proud of our diverse school community and actively promote understanding, kindness, and acceptance of others.
Through our broad and inclusive curriculum, children learn about different cultures, religions, traditions, and beliefs. We believe that understanding leads to respect, and respect builds strong communities.
We promote these values by:
- Teaching children to value and celebrate differences
- Encouraging kindness, empathy, and consideration for others
- Learning about different faiths, cultures, and traditions
- Challenging stereotypes and promoting equality
- Creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and included
At Highfields Primary Academy, we strive to develop caring, respectful, and open-minded young people who are well prepared to contribute positively to modern Britain and the wider world.
