Personal Development

Whilst our core curriculum, including our Reading Enhanced Curriculum, provides rich opportunities for children to learn, explore and access a wide range of experiences, Enrichment offers an additional and vital layer to this provision. It is a key part of our ethos, broadening children’s horizons through opportunities they may not ordinarily experience outside of school. Enrichment also promotes individual choice and personal growth, particularly through our after-school clubs, where children can discover, pursue and develop their own interests and talents.

At Highfields Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils receive a broad and meaningful personal development offer. This focus was strengthened through our desire to further improve pupils’ knowledge and understanding of British Values, different faiths and cultures, equality and diversity, what makes us unique (including protected characteristics), and healthy lifestyles. We also wanted to enhance the range of opportunities and experiences available to pupils for personal development, ensuring every child is equipped with the knowledge, confidence and character to thrive.

Our Aims

At Highfields Primary Academy, we want all of our pupils to become the very best versions of themselves. We want them to:

  • become well-rounded, knowledgeable citizens, fully prepared for life ahead
  • be proud of who they are and value their individuality
  • communicate confidently and effectively, expressing their knowledge, views and aspirations
  • recognise, respect and celebrate diversity, both in themselves and in others
  • make informed choices that support their health, wellbeing and future success

Our Personal Development Framework

Our Personal Development Framework is made up of two key elements:

Delta Stars
A progressive programme of events, experiences and activities across 16 strands, designed to help pupils become well-rounded, knowledgeable citizens who are well prepared for life beyond primary school.

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) Education
We have chosen Jigsaw as our preferred PSHE programme because of its well-sequenced, progressive curriculum, which is regularly updated in line with current legislation. The programme is supported by a wide range of high-quality resources, including unit knowledge organisers, which help pupils make connections in their learning and retain key knowledge over time.

Together, these elements ensure that pupils at Highfields Primary Academy receive a rich, inclusive and ambitious personal development curriculum that supports them academically, socially, morally and emotionally.
